Founded in 1987, The Karsten Company, Inc. is a commercial builder with a staff of professionals providing services to the private sector. The company specializes in the following areas:


  • Review of program goals and requirements.
  • Prepare preliminary construction schedule including activity of all team members.
  • Prepare a trade-by-trade preliminary cost estimate.
  • Advise architect and design team with regard to budget and material selection.
  • Recommend most effective subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Assist owner and architect in preparing documents for permits and submission to local agencies for approval.

Construction Management Services

  • Establish detailed construction schedule.
  • Expedite ordering and shipping of all material.
  • Prepare and implement subcontractor agreements.
  • Maintain communication and coordinate activities of the architect engineers, owner and all other consultants.
  • Provide supervision of all site activities.
  • Review, analyze and maintain change orders.
  • Maintain and update related accounting, including timely and well-supported monthly billings and disbursements, budgets and change orders.
  • Maintain and supervise all site safety requirements in accordance with O.S.H.A. standards.
  • Maintain the work site in a clean and safe manner.

Design Build Services

  • Karsten’s design/build program offers the client a single point of responsibility for both construction and design services.
  • Karsten selects an architect with specific talent in the client’s market area to join our team.
  • Karsten professionals work closely with architect, considering the best design and construction options to meet the client’s needs, expectations and budget.
  • Karsten and architect work as team, contributing specialized knowledge and experience on an ongoing basis.

The Karsten development approach is unique in that we offer multiple perspectives to every transaction.  With over 30 years of construction experience, decades of capital finance knowledge and an eye towards affordable housing, economic development and historic preservation, we provide the personal service expected of a small firm, combined with the sophisticated scheduling and budgeting capabilities of a large firm.  We are dedicated to the success of our investors and do so by providing time tested leadership.

Since 1987, we have successfully completed thousands of projects throughout a wide range of sectors including industrial, educational, residential, office, retail and healthcare.

Projects completed by Karsten include the full scale recapitalization and preservation of the Boston Back Bay Lenox Hotel, as well as educational use facilities at Boston College, Northeastern University and Babson College.  Karsten’s work with the New Balance Corporation is the flagship example of development work.  This work included new retail, corporate and manufacturing facilities located throughout New England.  Other major projects include the Boston Design Center, Weymouth Train Station and The Karsten Company Corporate Headquarters.

In the new millennium, Karsten’s work shifted towards development as the economy dictated changes in development and construction.  Out of the gate, the Karsten team completed the St. Chrysostom town houses in Wollaston, followed by the adaptive reuse of St. George’s Church in Norwood to condominiums.

Our latest development, the 42 unit Copper Cove Village, towers over Plymouth Harbor, offering sweeping views of Plymouth Bay.  Units will be available in 2016.  The project also includes an affordability component through the state’s Local Initiative Program. For more information and wait list >>

Upcoming projects include Atlantic Gardens in North Quincy, a 32 unit affordable housing project utilizing Low Income Housing Tax Credits, followed by Abington Crossing Transit Oriented Development (TOD) project.
